Spent a week on a Lights Over Lapland Aurora Photo Expedition with Chad and Linnea Blakley. It was excellent. Here are the first couple shots!

Anyone want to go to the Minnesota Scottish Fair with me? http://bit.ly/jXA9UT
pheonix7284: (Die plz)

Last weekend I did some upgrades on my computer (failing hard drive/OS) and while I was at it, figured I would install Windows 7 instead of XP. Well, aside from a period of 20 minutes where the screen was blank and mouseless and it was thinking really, really hard before displaying the login screen after SP1 (showed up while I was frantically searching for solutions – and boots fine now so… >.> ) everything had so far started working with little to no issues.

Today, I wanted to burn something to DVD – Windows 7 saw what my optical drive was, had already loaded in the drivers (it was on the compatible hardware list) and read everything fine, but…. wouldn’t recognize it as a device capable of burning.

I go out searching for possibly solutions, and come up with Microsoft FixIt (and specifically for DVD issues if someone comes across this needing a fix.).

But when I see this:

all I can think of is this:

Anyone in the Twin Cities want to take some pottery classes with me?

Throughout the end of August I was moving into the new place – no carpets, gas stove, and we are +2 kitties. Downsides – but worth it – no AC (we got window units). And it’s an older building so, electricity is a bit uppity. (Nothing some well placed UPS’ can’t fix for the most part.)

So! Onto the tour!

Day three shenanigans began rather late, since the Archivist and I just couldn’t get up.

After reading this artcle on io9: http://io9.com/5573879/how-did-the-victims-of-the-plinean-eruption-of-vesuvius-die

From the comments:

"Does this hold true for Super Volcanoes? 'Cause the Yellowstone Volcano keeps me up at night."

Me too commenter. But at least it will be sheer awesome. And you get to skip the volcanic winter following.

For all you writers out there - today from the Winston:

Writing a book is an adventure: it begins as an amusement, then it becomes a mistress, then a master, and finally a tyrant. -- Winston Churchill

Since I wait forever to finish this I can’t remember whats what from my trip I will give anecdotal highlights, and some random images!

Day Two

I managed to not kick the Archivist in the head while I was sleeping. This is quite and accomplishment according to my host. (Sometimes I’m a huge sleep flailer.) We ate some leftover pan-asian food and headed out to try and see the National Archives!

Here is the Archivist – ready to tourist up this joint.

On my furcation (furlough + vacation) during the first week of march, I ran off to Washington D.C. for a long weekend. Since the default wordpress gallery software hates me, and wouldn’t let me make multiple gallery sets, or un-attach already uploaded images, this took a bit longer to put together than expected. There will be later posts with more. >.<

Due to some surprise!madness! my host was in a rush to get me from the airport back to her place. She had an unexpected flight to catch to Atlanta for a meeting the next morning. I was whisked through some of Virginia(BROWN road signs? WTF!), across the river and hauled up through a basement to an apartment, where I was pointed to the door keys, and the fridge - with its many takeout menus - and left alone in a strange apartment. This is where I had the joy of letting everyone know I wasn't lost in some random airport in the wrong state via a handy cell phone I just happen to carry with me everywhere.

Here is a lovely view of the basement!
